Specialized Procedures

At Sri Ramachandra Children's and Dental Hospital, our pediatric care team is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to deliver comprehensive and specialized procedures aimed at providing the highest quality of care for children. Below are the specialized procedures available at our hospital:

  1. Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT): A non-invasive method to assess lung function, particularly in young children who cannot perform traditional spirometry. FOT provides valuable insights into respiratory mechanics, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various respiratory conditions.
  2. Spirometry: This is a standard pulmonary function test that measures the volume of air an individual can exhale after a deep breath, helping diagnose and monitor conditions like asthma, cystic fibrosis, and other chronic lung diseases.
  3. Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR): PEFR is a quick, simple test that measures the maximum speed of expiration. It is a crucial tool for monitoring respiratory conditions like asthma, enabling the assessment of airflow obstruction and the effectiveness of treatment.
  4. Advanced Ventilation Techniques:
    1. High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV): This is an advanced ventilation method used for critically ill children with severe respiratory failure. HFOV delivers very small breaths at high frequencies, reducing lung injury while maintaining effective gas exchange.
    2. Mechanical Ventilators: We provide mechanical ventilation to support breathing in pediatric patients with respiratory insufficiency. Our ventilators are equipped with advanced settings tailored to the needs of each child.
    3. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP): Used primarily for infants with respiratory distress, CPAP helps keep the airways open and supports breathing without the need for intubation.
    4. High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC): This provides heated and humidified oxygen at higher flow rates, offering respiratory support that is more comfortable and effective for children with moderate to severe respiratory distress.
  5. Exchange Transfusion: A life-saving procedure often used in cases of acute severe jaundice, hemolytic disease of the newborn, or certain metabolic conditions. This involves a therapeutic exchange of child's blood with fresh donor blood to rapidly correct metabolic abnormalities.
  6. Phototherapy (Single & Double Surface): A non-invasive treatment for neonatal jaundice, where the baby is exposed to blue light that helps break down bilirubin in the skin by the principle of photoisomerization. Double surface phototherapy is used for more severe cases, exposing the baby to UVB light from both above and below.
  7. Intercostal Drainage Tube Insertion (ICDT): A procedure to drain air, fluid, or pus from the pleural space in conditions like pneumothorax or pleural effusion or empyema, restoring normal lung function of the child.
  8. Lumbar Puncture: A diagnostic procedure to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for analysis, which is critical in diagnosing illnesses like meningitis, encephalitis, hemorrhages, and other neurological conditions.
  9. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS): A bedside ultrasound performed by clinicians to quickly assess and diagnose various conditions like cardiac function, fluid status, and abdominal pathology, enhancing immediate clinical decision-making.
  10. Holter Monitoring: A continuous, 24-48 hour ECG recording used to detect arrhythmias or other heart-related issues in children, providing valuable insights for managing pediatric cardiac conditions.
  11. Central Line Placement: This procedure involves the insertion of a catheter into a large vein (Central Line) or peripheral vein (PICC Line) or Umbilical catheterization - often used for administering medications, fluids, or parenteral nutrition over a long period, especially in critically ill children or neonates.
  12. Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN): A life-sustaining procedure where nutrition is provided intravenously, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract, for children who are unable to eat or absorb nutrients normally due to various medical conditions.

These specialized procedures highlight our commitment to providing cutting-edge pediatric care, ensuring that every child receives the most advanced and effective treatment tailored to their unique needs.
